| Churches There are several churches in Torrevieja but we will concentrate on two of them which are best known by their popularity and antiquity. Firstly there is the Inmaculada Concepción church, built in 1844 to celebrate the patron saint of Torrevieja. It was constructed upon the foundations of the old church that was destroyed by the earthquake that devastated the town in 1829. The reconstruction of the temple was carried out through the use of some of the materials from the Torre Vigía (a watch tower after which the town was named). The church was built under a neoclassical style following a structural model that appeared in the 18th century. In the last few years the church has gone through several processes of painting with new pictures referring to religious and local subjects. And secondly there is the Sagrado Corazón de Jesús church, popularly known as the "Ermita". It is located in one of the most typical areas of Torrevieja, in the Barrio de la Punta, in the well known Plaza de Oriente. Initially it was a building totally different from the one we can visit today, which shows a modernistic style, and where the traditional Christmas crib is set every year, receiving a large number of visitors. |
