History

Torrevieja originated from the spot we now know as Torrelamata, the place where Italian fishermen arrived from the Isle of Tabarca, constituting the foundation of what was to become the modern and cosmopolitan town we know today.

The reason for the change of the location was the large number of people attracted by the salt lagoon. Little by little the population started to settle around the "Torre Vigía" (a watch tower), and the 12th July 1830 Torrevieja achieved the denomination of town hall.

The 21st March 1829, an earthquake devastated the town, destroying all the buildings and causing a drastic reduction in the number of inhabitants. The remaining population put their all effort into the reconstruction of the town, allowing for the creationof the Torrevieja we now know.

It was back in the 1960´s when Torrevieja started its deep transformation to become a touristic resort.
