Industry
The main industry in TORREVIEJA as such is
what is popularly known as Las Salinas, the exploitation of the salt lagoons
of Torrevieja and La Mata, which have a polygonal shape and an extension
of 1,400 hectares from which the salt is extracted and then exported to
many different parts of the world, an activity that started back in the
18th century.
The salt lagoons of TORREVIEJA are the most important in Europe and the
second on a worldwide scale. The richness of the salt extracted from the
lagoons offers the possibility of getting different chemical products
from them, as well as diverse types of salt with different utilities,
such as the melting of the ice formed in the coldest areas of Europe.
The production of salt in the TORREVIEJA lagoons reaches one million tons.
The United States as well as other American countries are the main markets
which receive the salt from TORREVIEJA, followed by the Nordic countries
and Europe in general.
